“Alone Together”

Oct 27, 2023

This past weekend, we traveled to New York City to celebrate my son’s film being accepted and shown at the 2023-2024 New York DOG Film Festival (https://www.dogfilmfestival.com/).

We are incredibly proud of Max Berkey and what he has been able to accomplish while following his passion.  He graduated from FAMO- a film school in the Czech Republic and is now working for a film marketing company in Washington, DC.  Max is a person that “does” and I continue to learn and get inspired by him daily!

The FESTIVAL WAS GREAT and celebrated how dogs specifically enhance our lives.  While waiting, my wife and I chatted with the other guests.  We were both a little surprised to see the number of “solo” attendees.  One was an NYU student who wanted to “kill time” on the weekend.  Another was a woman whose husband was working, and she needed some “me time”.  Finally, one other person simply said he was “bored” and had nothing else to do.

After, we had a moment to grab coffee before driving back home.  I was a little surprised to see this scene at the coffee shop.

I asked one of the girls why she came to this location.  She liked studying and doing work around other people to feel their energy, even though she had never talked to anyone in the shop.  She did not feel as alone in the city.  Another customer said that they also liked traffic in the city, because it helped them to feel less alone.

Some people are introverts.

However…

Some people want to talk.

They might just not know how.

I am taking this lesson to LOOK UP more often than DOWN

Observe if ANYONE looks lonely or appears to want to ENGAGE in conversation.

Starting dialogue is as EASY as offering a compliment.
