See Something. DO Something...

See Something. DO Something.
Written By Bart Berkey | Most People Don't
You’ve seen the signs.
At airports. Train stations. Stadiums.
“See something, say something.”
It was created to keep people safe - to encourage action when something feels off. But what if we applied that same idea… not just to safety, but to everyday moments?
What if it became:
See something. Do something. (When it’s doable.)
Not everything requires a speech.
Not everything requires authority.
But a lot of things - small things - require action.
I watched it happen in a parking lot.
A woman unloaded her groceries, got into her car… and left her shopping cart directly behind the car next to her. Not close. Not slightly off. Directly in the way, blocking any chance for that driver to back out.
At first, I thought it had to be intentional. A joke. A setup.
It wasn’t.
It was careless. Inconsiderate. Easy to judge.
I didn’t say anything, because sometimes saying something escalates more than it solves.
But I did something.
I moved the cart. Thirty-nine seconds.
Problem solved. A stranger avoided a dent, a delay, or a frustrating moment.
And here’s where most people don’t go, but where the real opportunity is.
What if there was more to her story?
What if she had just picked up urgent medication and needed to get home immediately?
What if she wasn’t careless… just overwhelmed?
What if something we couldn’t see was driving that behavior?
It doesn’t make the action right.
But it might change how quickly we judge it.
What if, instead of assuming the worst, we chose a more generous interpretation first?
Not blind acceptance—just a pause before labeling. "Seek to Understand Without Judgement".
Because what we see is only part of the story. How we respond is the part that defines us.
This week, I saw the opposite of that parking lot moment - and it hit just as hard.
At an AvalonBay Communities training, one of the team members had just stepped into a new role. First meeting. New pressure. New expectations.
Her teammates could have simply said, “Congrats,” and moved on.
They didn’t. They noticed something more and they acted.
One person left and came back with a beautiful flower arrangement.
The team paused everything.
They spoke about her. Celebrated her. Made the moment real.
Tears. Connection. Belonging.
All because someone didn’t just see something... They did something.

Here’s your challenge:
This week don’t just notice.
Act.
At work:
Recognize effort that’s going unseen—and say something or do something about it.
At home:
Acknowledge the small things before they go unnoticed.
In everyday moments:
Pick up the cart. Hold the door. Send the message. Make the call.
It doesn’t take much time.
It takes intention.
Most people notice.
Most People Don’t… act.
But you do.
