This is not just a greeting.

These words will reset how you connect with people.

"BTW, Good Morning"

These words changed the way I lead and enhanced my career years ago.

I was in “go mode,” giving out tasks as soon as I walked in.

Direct. Efficient. No small talk.

I believed that this is what a good leader did: wake up, get focused, & start moving the team forward.

One morning, I rattled off instructions to my Assistant. She listened patiently, then replied with a gentle but pointed correction:

“BTW, good morning.”

That single phrase stopped me in my tracks. She was right, (and kind), as I had skipped the most important part: the person.

Since then, I’ve made it a practice to balance and prioritize my communication from purely task-driven to people-driven first.

The formula became simple:

1. Person → 2. Purpose → 3. Praise.

  • Person: Start with the human being in front of you. Acknowledge them, greet them, connect with them.
  • Purpose: Share the task, the direction, or the reason you’re talking to them.
  • Praise: End with appreciation or encouragement.

Instead of “Do this,” it became “Good morning, here’s what we need to focus on today, thank you for making it happen.”

That small shift? It builds trust, respect, and motivation.

Most People Don’t remember just the work you assign, they remember how you made them feel when they became involved in the process.

Triple P Framework: (PPP)

A Better Way to Lead Conversations

When giving direction, don’t just focus on the task. Use this simple flow:

1. Person → Start with them.
Greet, acknowledge, or connect first.
“Good morning, Alex…”

2. Purpose → Share the task or reason.
“…here’s what we need to focus on today…do you have any ideas?”

3. Praise → End with appreciation or encouragement.
“…thanks for making it happen.”
