Legacy Isn't Left, It's Lived

"Bet On Yourself To Make The Difference You Want"
Realize this.
Legacy Isn’t Left—It’s Lived.
When we hear the word "legacy", we often picture the reputation we’ll leave behind.
The way people will remember us.
But true legacy isn’t just about memories; it’s about impact—the choices we make, the lives we touch, and the lasting influence we build every single day.
True visionaries
The leaders who shape the world for generations understand that legacy isn’t built by chance, it is by choice.
It’s not about what you leave behind unintentionally; it’s about the way you lead every single day. It's the way you TREAT others consistently.
It’s in the way you inspire, empower, and elevate those who work with and for you.
Real impact isn’t measured in fleeting accomplishments but in the lives you touch, the cultures you cultivate, and the standards you set through unwavering integrity and purpose.
In our latest podcast episode, we sat down with Gary Brandeis, CEO of Scholar Hotels and proud Penn State alum, who doesn’t just talk about leadership—he lives it.
Gary has a crystal-clear vision for his legacy and is intentional in the way he builds it. He believes that true leadership isn’t about status—it’s about service.
Surprisingly, he openly declares himself the "least important person in his company", because his mission is to empower his colleagues to thrive.
I interpreted this learning, "Become Invaluable by becoming the least important person". He knows his personal success comes from others.
- How they execute
- How they serve
- How they create memories
Through trust, mentorship, and unwavering support, he creates an environment where others succeed, because he knows that when they rise, so does the entire organization.
Gary doesn’t just build hotels, he builds work communities that will far outlast him.
Every location he selects is hand-picked with care, backed by deep research, and chosen for its potential to create lasting benefits.
His approach isn’t about quick returns; it’s about long-term impact.
He develops hospitality spaces that don’t just house guests, they also enrich the people and places around them.
Gary’s journey started at a very young age, in the hospitality trenches, washing pots & bussing tables.
As a young adult, he pursued his accounting degree with one goal: to eventually bet on himself.
When Penn State made the bold move to let go of its iconic Nittany Lion Inn, Gary seized the moment.
It was a very competitive endeavor. In order to win this opportunity, Gary chose to create a team of only top-notch architects and designers to bring his vision to life and win the bid.
He transformed risk into opportunity, he continued the popular hospitality tradition, and updated The Nittany Lion Inn for furture generations to enjoy this historic symbol of first-class hospitality at Penn State in the State College community. This hotel first opened for business in 1931. This property is one of the nation's top university hotels.
Why? Because for Gary, success isn’t measured in square footage—it’s measured in people, in leadership, and in the lasting impact he creates every step of the way.
“If I make a profit, I invest in the building. But if I do that well, I can invest in my people. That’s where the real legacy is.”
– Gary Brandeis
It’s not about fame for Gary, it’s about impact—the kind you can feel in every hallway, handshake, and opportunity created. The people that we met displayed this powerfully.
During my keynote presentation yesterday, I shared a video about a boy named Bryant who was proud to celebrate his good grades with a convenience store manager in Staten Island. (on TikTok @islandock). It’s simple—just two people connecting. But Island Ock isn’t just handing out clothes or rewards—he’s handing out belief.
From Grades for Grabs to Tutoring Sessions in local libraries, he’s instilling the kind of pride that kids carry with them for life.
In another State: Another Builder of Legacy
On Staten Island, far away from hotel developments, a different kind of legacy is also taking shape.
This one is not built in buildings, it's built in hearts.
Island Ock (you may know him from TikTok), is "Doing what most people don't’'
He walks the streets, lifts spirits, and shows up for kids who need to be seen.
His work isn’t about recognition.
It’s about:
- Real Impact
- Building Self-Esteem
- Creating Moments of Connection
- Proving That Presence Alone Can Change A Life
When these local kids obtain improvements in their grades, Island Ock rewards them with money and items that they get select from his store.
Sometimes, "Anything and Everything" that they want, from his store.
One boy, conservatively selected eggs, milk, and bread, just the basics.
Island Ock saw his selection, and highly encouraged him to go back and "get something fun for himself".
Then you see the boy's happy smile as he returns with a handful of small bags of chips for himself.
- He’s not betting on institutions
- He’s not waiting on permission
- He’s betting on the next generation—and he’s showing up for them now
- Whether You're Building Hotels or Hope…
Legacy isn’t about a plaque on the wall or your name on the door. It’s about:
🔹 Betting on yourself—and following through
🔹 Being the least important person—so others can become their best
🔹 Taking risks—not to win alone, but to bring others with you
🔹 Creating confidence in others—because belief is contagious
Reflection Questions for YOU:
What risk are you putting off that could actually change everything?
Who in your life could benefit from just one moment of belief from you?
What can you build today -not for the history books, but for someone’s tomorrow?
Closing Thought:
- Most people don’t create legacies
- Most people don’t take the risk
- Most people don’t believe in others before the world does but you do
- So keep going. Keep showing up. Keep building something that lasts.
🔹 Every week I have conversations with successful leaders that share powerful stories, practical insights, and motivational lessons to help you be better, feel better, do better, and enjoy a more meaningful and impactful life.
